National Pension (Survivor's Basic Pension)

Getting money

This pension is available to the spouses or children with dependents who were supported by someone who was enrolled in the National Pension Plan when he/she died.
*The payment is made until the end of March of the fiscal year in which the dependent reaches the age of 18 (or the month before the month when the dependent turns 20, if he/she has a disability at the 1st or 2nd level of the Basic Disability Pension).

Payment Requirements

In principle, one of the following must apply:

  1.  When a person who is currently enrolled in the National Pension Plan dies.
(This includes cases where a person between 60 and 65 years old who has a domicile in Japan dies, even after the enrollment period of the National Pension Plan has ended for that person.)
  2.  When a person was eligible to receive the basic old-age pension for 25 years or more dies.

*In the case of (1) above, the insured person must have paid premiums or received exemption from premiums for at least two-thirds of the period of enrollment up to two months prior to the month of death, or must not have failed to pay premiums during the most recent one-year period up to two months prior to the month in which the date of death occurs. Please inquire at one of the contacts below for more details.
